World’s oldest dam built in 2nd Century A.D.

Kallanai Dam or Grand Anicut of India is the world’s oldest dam (some sources consider it as one of the world’s oldest dams). This dam located 20 km away from Tiruchirapalli, Tamilnadu was constructed by the King Karikala Chola of the Chola Dynasty in 2nd Century A.D. Measured at 1,082 feet long with a maximum height of 18 feet and is 40-60 feet wide, Kallanai Dam is said to have irrigated around a million acres of land in the last two thousand years and provides waters to around 400,000 hectares along the Delta region.
